ID Requirements for HGV Drivers – Your Quick Checklist
If you’re chasing a Class 1 HGV licence, the first hurdle isn’t the test – it’s proving who you are. The DVLA needs solid proof of identity and residency before they let you start the training or issue the licence. Missing a single paper can delay your whole plan, so keep this list handy.
Core documents the DVLA accepts
For a new or renewed HGV licence you must supply at least one of the following original documents:
- Valid UK passport – the easiest option, as it shows both identity and nationality.
- Biometric residence permit (BRP) – if you’re not a British citizen but have settled status.
- Photographic driving licence (full or provisional) – must be current and not expired.
- National identity card (issued by an EU country) – still accepted for identity proof.
Alongside the primary ID you also need a document that proves your address, such as a recent utility bill, bank statement, or council tax bill dated within the last three months.
Things that can trip you up
Many drivers think any old photo ID will do, but the DVLA is strict. A student ID, old passport, or a photo of a document won’t count. Also, the address proof must match the name on your primary ID – if you’ve changed your name, bring a marriage certificate or deed poll too.
For non‑UK residents, the BRP must be valid for at least six months after you apply. If your visa is close to expiry, renew it first, otherwise the HGV licence request will be rejected.
When you’re applying online, you’ll be asked to upload scanned copies. Make sure the scans are clear, colour, and show the whole document. Blurry or cropped images will be rejected, forcing you to resend them and waste time.
Lastly, keep an eye on expiry dates. Your HGV licence is tied to the validity of your ID. If your passport or BRP expires, you’ll need to update it before the licence can be renewed.
Having the right ID ready saves you a trip back to the DVLA and gets you back on the road faster. Print this checklist, double‑check each item, and you’ll avoid the usual delays.
