HGV Trunking: How to Load Your Truck Safely and Efficiently
Got a big load to move and not sure where to start? Trunking an HGV might feel daunting, but with a few simple steps you can do it right the first time. Below you’ll find the must‑know rules, practical tips and a quick loading checklist that keep you legal and safe on the road.
Key Safety Rules You Can’t Ignore
First off, the law matters. In the UK the maximum authorised mass (MAM) for your vehicle is printed on the registration plate and in the V5C. Never exceed that number – it’s the single biggest factor in avoiding fines and accidents.
Next, think about axle loads. Each axle has a limit, and an overloaded axle can cause tyre failure or suspension damage. Use a portable weigh‑bridge or a certified weighing station before you hit the road to check front and rear loads.
Secure the cargo. Strap it down with lashing points that are rated for the weight you’re carrying. If you’re moving pallets, use anti‑slip mats and edge protectors to stop them shifting in corners.
Visibility is another hidden risk. Make sure the load doesn’t block the driver’s view through the side mirrors or the rear window. Anything taller than 2.5 m must have a reflective marker or warning sign attached.
Step‑by‑Step Loading Process
1. Plan the load order. Put the heaviest items nearest to the centre of the chassis and evenly across the axle line. Light items go on top or towards the rear.
2. Check dimensions. Measure the cargo and compare it to the interior width and height of the truck. Leave at least 100 mm clearance on each side for safe movement.
3. Use the right equipment. Forklifts, pallet jacks and tail lifts make loading easier and reduce the chance of dropping a load.
4. Secure as you go. After each major piece is placed, attach straps or chains before moving on to the next item. This prevents a shifting load that could topple later.
5. Do a final check. Walk around the truck, make sure nothing is loose, all straps are tight, and the load is balanced left‑to‑right. Verify that the total weight matches the MAM.
6. Document everything. Keep a copy of the loading plan, weight records and any permits required for oversized loads. Inspectors will ask for these if you’re stopped.
Following this routine saves time, cuts down on wear and tear, and keeps you on the right side of the law. It also means fewer surprises on the motorway – no sudden lurches or squeaking brakes.
